Zionist, Jewish activist and leader of the Slovakian Jewish community during the Holocaust, Gisi Fleischmann — worked tirelessly to rescue Jewish victims of Nazi persecution, to smuggle refugees to Palestine, and in attempts to bribe Nazi officials to stop deportations. Ultimately she was included in the last transport from Slovakia to the Auschwitz death camp, from which she never returned. To use gender as a framework for analysis is simply to become more attentive to the possible consequences of one of the major axes of all social organization—together with age, class, race and religion.
